Beautiful Scars

Living with kidney failure.

I love being a documentary photographer and telling people's stories, like my friend, Midnight's,. She is one of the most courageous and strong woman that I know and her beautiful scars are proof of that. She has battled so much to be alive, including coming back from kidney failure to a code blue on the operating table. Her scars are beautiful reminders of how hard she fights to stay alive while she awaits her third kidney transplant.

Many people all over the world have to stay alive by being hooked up to a dialysis maching.

Her veins are worn out from all the years of dialysis and collapse while trying to receive a treatment.

When the dialysis port that usually hooks up to arm is no longer possible because the veins are so tired from having so many treatments, you have to get treatment via a catheter in your stomach.

Crying from pain and discomfort is a regular weekly occurrence when you live on dialysis.

The working class people deserve better transportation to and from their doctors visits than what they get. But she does what she has to do to see all her doctors regularly.

Showers are not possible with a catheter in place, so she washers her hair in the kitchen sink.

Her husband lovingly helps her with a sponge bath since you can't shower with a catheter sticking out of your stomack.

Housework is not easily done when you all your energy goes into taking care of yourself to stay alive.

It takes a lot of medication to keep a donor kidney alive and functioning properly.
